The London Astoria venue looks to be doomed, after Ken Livingstone confirmed it has to be demolished.
The capital's mayor says plans for a new underground network will result in the closure of the famous club, although he has also insisted it will be replaced.
The Crossrail service, which will open up links across the city, is expected to be complete in 2017, ending the hopes of many music fans.
Around 35,000 are said to have signed a petition in a bid to save the Astoria, which looks set to go the same way as the recently closed Spitz and Hammersmith Apollo.
Speaking yesterday, Livingstone said "There are some instances where that just physically isn't possible. The construction of Crossrail means that the Astoria can't be saved."
However, he added: "We're basically putting in a vast train station but the developers that have actually drawn up the scheme for the area are replacing it with a larger live music venue."
There are currently no estimates as to when the venue will actually close its doors.
