i think the main point is that its about white WORKING CLASS people, its probably more to to with the working class and how they've been affected by the changes in society recently, ie. badly

why not call it WORKING CLASS season then? by calling it white theyre inferring that this is about working class as the 'real' or ultimate symbol of 'whiteness' in this country. ive no prob with them doing something on working class white people, esp when people think its okay to throw 'chav' around like its nothing and take the piss, but the way this is being pitched is a bit worrying to me.
ill reserve full judgment til i see the programmes of course, but the advert - where a white guy gets his face written on in non english languages in black marker until hes written on so much that his face turns black was a bit fucked up to me, esp cos at the end the tagline is 'has white working class identity dissapeared'. its implying all the usual xenophobic shit about immigrants 'ruining' traditional 'british identity' (as if trad brit id wouldnt have changed without immigrants), totally replacing it with a foreign culture and burying all notions of englishness and sullying this once great country from what it used to be etc etc. |

and the thing is that most of the time, these types of things point the figure at immigrants, cos its an easy target, rather than the white middle/upper class people who control this country. |

well the way i see the advert is that its how they percieve themselves and how they feel that immigration (among other things) has affected them.
it'll be interesting i think.
i do hope that it dosnt come across a finger-pointing so lets wait and see.
is working class the job that you do or is it a social group you belong to?
I thought i was working class because of the job i was doing but my friend pointed out that i definately wasnt "working clas", my upbringing and my education showed that. |

i dont mind seeing a docu or programmes how immigration has affected, whether its good or bad, im just tired of seeing it represented as purely negative, and MPs and other ppl in power (who know we need immigrants and benefit from them in many ways) appeasing everyone who thinks its negative by going along with that bollocks rather than offering a fair picture of it. THAT would be nice imo. and a channel like bbc2 should be doing that instead of making what from the looks of it is gonna be stupid daily mail-type shit. ill wait to see it though - hopefully ill be wrong. i dont think class is about what job you do, its more about your upbringing, where you grew up, and how, etc etc. class is basically the uk version of caste.
