07:40am, 19th Nov 2001   SANDEEP'S FAT BURNING TIPS - part 1

Sandeep

[Profile - Diary]

Nutrition/Supplementation for fat loss

Eat 6 meals a day, being careful not to consume more carbs
than you can readily assimilate. In other words, small portions of rice,
pastas, breads, fruit, vegetables etc. (for 180 pound person, aim for less than
50 grams of carbs/meal x 6 meals=300 grams= 1200 calories from carbs). Have a
protein source with each meal, and keep fat intake around 20% (preferably from
flax seed or olive oil).

Eat lots of fruit and vegetables as your carb sources, as they contain loads of
fiber, and are very low glycemic. Try to have one or two fruit or vegetable
servings with each meal, like a small apple, handful of broccoli, an orange,
handful of grapes, etc. Eat them first to lower glycemic index of any foods
that follow.

For supplements, try out the caffeine/aspirin/ephedrine stack a half an hour
before your cardio session in the mornings. Even without working out, it boosts
fat mobilization by nearly 20%! There are plenty of supplements that combine
some of these ingredients for you already, or buy them separately.

Also, if you're cutting back on calories, you might want to invest in a whey
protein powder to keep nitrogen levels high and minimize muscle breakdown.

The hardest part of any fat loss program is discipline.
This program is simple, and it will work. But you have to be able to turn down
cookies, chocolate, chips, and soft drinks without even flinching. You don't
have to starve, just don't snack! And if you absolutely need to cheat, save it
for one day a week, preferably after a wrokout when you can use the most
calories without storing them as fat.

Remember, the body fights for homeostasis. It doesn't want to lose weight, it
wants to survive, not look good! So after a few days of dieting, your gonna get
some big time urges for food. Don't give in, otherwise you'll just be caving in
to your bodies desire to stay the same, and it'll do just that!

You should see some progress after just one week. Look for new veins popping
out, clothes fitting loosely, muscular definition, etc. The first place you
lose fat is the last place you stored it, so don't expect to see big progress
in your problem areas right away. Just because you lost 2 pounds of fat doesn't
mean it came off your stomach, but more probably your back, thighs, arms, and a
bit off your belly.

Stick with this program for 4 weeks, and don't cheat, and you'll make great
progress. Don't think you can make up for 2 days of binging with extra
exercise. If you can't control your urge to binge, your destined to fail until you do learn to control it. I can tell you what you must do, but you have to find the will power to do it!

For 2000 calorie diet, each meal (of 6) should contain roughly:

·Carbohydrates: 40 grams
·Protein: 25 grams
·Fat: 7 grams

Carbohydrate sources that you should use instead include:
·Vegetables
·Beans
·Fruit
·Dairy products(milk, yogurt)
·Nuts
·Whole grain products (oatmeal, breads with flour not listed as first ingredient)

Here's a quick list of protein sources as well:
·Lean meats (beef, pork, lamb, ...)
·Chicken, Turkey
·Fish
·Beans
·Lowfat cheese, cottage cheese
·Milk, yogurt
·Eggs and egg whites
·Shellfish and Seafood (shrimp, lobster, oysters, mussels, scallops, etc.)
·Spinach (almost as much protein as carbs, Popeye was on to something!!)
·Soy products

Here's a list of foods to avoid, and where to cut back on carbs(small portions are OK):
·Potatoes and potato products (chips, fries, mashed)
·Corn and Corn products (popcorn, corn starch, corn chips)
·Breads with flour listed as first ingredient
·Pastas and Rice (some are good though, whole wheat, whole grain)
·Non-diet sodas, some fruit juices
·Lowfat labels that replace fat with sugar for flavor (dressings, toppings)
·Processed meats (too much filler and sodium)
·Sweets
·Donuts and pastries

A bodybuilder, or anyone trying to lose fat and build muscle, should definitely consume more protein, and less carbs. Endurance athletes have very high metabolisms that can easily process a large amount of carbohydrates, but for the rest of us, we have to be careful because excess carbs can be converted and stored as fat.

Glycemic Index(GI)- it is a measure of how much blood sugar is elevated in response to eating food. White bread & glucose have value of 100, and the lower the better. High blood sugar leads to high insulin levels which leads to fat storage (of excess calories) and less satiety (hunger pangs come again sooner).

Dear ggrh2f,

Thank you for your letter dated Mon 19, Nov 2001. I will be posting a quide on building muscle in my 2nd part. As for being a vegetarian, it is vitally important you find suitable sources of protein. I recommend beans, lowfat cheeses, and egg whites. Try soya milk as an alternative to 'normal' milk. Also, meat substitutes like 'quorn' products are very good. You can make your a tasty burger without the nasty piece of meat.

I hope this helps. Please don't hesitate to contact me again for any more advice.

yours' faithfully,

Sandeep

PS: KPMG was offering free gym membership :(

Dear Sandeep,
Thank you for ur response, to my enquiry. It was most refreshing, although I know what to eat and what not to, I am having trouble sticking to it, I have a double Sara Lee Chocolate Cake defrosting in the fridge.
What i am more concerned about is excerise, please hurry up with ur 2nd part.
What i really want to know, it how often i should go training, i am aiming for 4 times a week, and spending roughly 40-50 mins doing areobic excerises. spending 10 mins of the weights just to tone the muscle. Is this an effective approach.
Kind Regards

p.s KPMG also had sooo many pretty young asian girls working there you would not believe forget! also the chicks working in the buildings next to KPMG MSDW & SSB, were all tick as well and from foreign places!

its too advanced...

First of all 6 meals is too much!
Secondly, you have to eat pasta, potatoes or rice. Yes i agree it should be whole wheat / whole grain.

If u dont eat any of the above, u will end up being hungry all day.

I think you should have 30% pasta, potatoes or rice every day and 70% vegetables. And those who eat meat can include meat in those 30%.

but you need at least a good serving of protein with each meal- so if you don't eat meat find a rich source of protein to compensate.

knowledge about getting good protein in a vegetarian diet

The eight essential amino acids required by humans are: leucine, isoleucine, valine, threonine, methionine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, and lysine. The other amino acids can be synthesised by the body.

These 8 must be provided in the diet with EVERY meal in good amounts, for the meal to be any good in terms of protein.

NO vegetable food contains all 8 of these essential amino acids, except for Soya.

Milk, yoghurt and cheese DO contain all 8.

By using intelligent COMBINATIONS of food, all 8 amino acids can be gotten, in which case the vegetarian meal is about the same level as meat in terms of protein.

All cereals (ie wheat, rice, barley, corn) and nuts (except peanuts) are quite high in all the essential amino acids, except for LYSINE, so on their own are no good. However all pulses (eg bakebeans, peas, peanuts, mung beans, lentils of all kinds) are very high in lysine. Hence by combining a cereal and a pulse all the essential amino acids are met.

eg, beans on toast, peanut butter on toast, kidney beans and roti, rice and mung beans, and lots of other vegetarian meals, all provide essential amino acids.

SO if you eat intelligently, there is no need a vegetarian should be short on protein.

Alternatively, have a significant portion of dairy food with each meal (eg yoghurt, a few slices of cheese, a glass of milk), to buff up the essential amino acids. Eg, weetabix and milk is a high protein food.

Jacket potatoe and beans -DOES NOT provide all essential amino acids...but put a slice of bread in the equation and you are fine...or a bit of cheese.
NEVER allow chips to be eaten as an entire meal...it provides nothing. Never let Indian snacks (eg chevda, ghaatya, biscuits) be eaten as an entire breakfast. Breakfast is important.

Also, use whole grain cereals rather than white (includinng wholegrain bread) as they are significantly higher in protein.
