very tough opening game.
rafa has to be at his best to out smart martin oneill.
i dont think mascherano will play. benayoun will probably be benched too with babel probably not even making it.
i reckon he'll play champs league final line-up with kewell on the left. but crouch instead of mascherano. (442-gerrard deeper). high powered subs this time round. torres will play some part.
we'll probably miss loads of chances and torres to get the winner, on as a sub.

Benayoun isn't in the squad, which isn't a surprise really because its an away game. I think he'll feature more at Anfield.
Villa was the last game we won on the opening day of the season and that was four or so years ago. Bit strange that we haven't started the league at home for sometime now.
I think its just taking each game as it comes. I can see us winning today provided selection is right. I'm gonna go for Stevie to Partner Mascharano with Kewell and Pennant on the wings. Back is the same. Torres to start with Kuyt |

we had complete control of game for 85mins
one unlucky mistake my carragher and we were punished but luckily gerrard pulled it off
gerrard, alonso ran the midfield, wingers let us down today[pennant, risse]
kuyt and torres linked up well
torres seems a classier version of kuyt, works his arse off for the team, and for a slim guy, is very strong. he shouldve scored but luckily kuyt was alert, and ended up as own goal |

we had lots of chances, i agree with some_body, we looked crap on the wings, and pennant really annoyed me with his "dickhead" behaviour.
at full back, we looked sound defensively but not attacking enough.
what a goal from gerrard though!
babel looked awesome when he came on, 3 shots, 2 on target. with power. torres played well, kuyt aswell, both could have done better with their shooting. but that should come soon.
surprised crouch and benayoun wasnt on the bench. reckon theyll play against toulouse. |

I was saying throughout last season too that Pennant is an average player and his final ball is dreadful 8 out of 10 times. I guess Riise has the saving grace of a deadly left foot and being versatile but Pennant doesnt even have a good strike on him.
Pennant isnt worth his place in our XI.
3 points in anycase, and so the ball rolls on.

with pennent playing, he provides the team width to strech teams
and hes got pace for the counter attack
houllier days we never had width, and pace on the wings
pennant gives you that, and it gives the team good balance
gerrard cuts in and it narrows the team
babel played well, but for sum reason, his first touch didnt look that good, but he managed to keep the ball, cause his power[under a good couch, he could become awesome player |

Yeh Pennant didnt play wel but its early days...he was on fire in preseason not puttin a foot wrong. Its gud to hav options
theyl be times when gerrard will probably play out on the right coz i gurantee rafa wont play him there for every single game
there will be times when we wil need to play 2 defensive kinda midfielders (eg sissoko n masch)
the main thing is that we looked very gud goin forward...esp gerrard
babel will be awesom for us...once him n torres get used to the pace of the british game |

Pennant didn't have the best of games, but it wasn't that bad either and he'll just get better. Riise for me was a dissapointment, conceded possession one too many times.
UK Jatt is right, you can just see that Gerrard will play on the right agasint Chelsea. I reckon it will be Mascharano and Alonso in midfield. |

i dont think we should try to stop chelsea by sacrificing our own attacking players.
if we defend against essien, malouda and chelsea as a whole, we'll be giving them nothing to think about.
i think we should go 4-5-1 -> 4-3-3 against them, with mascherano, gerrard and sissoko in the middle, babel and kewell making up the 5 with torres up on his own. he and babel are the only ones who can trouble them with pace and power. |

A decent game, professional job done by the lads and an excellent goal by Voronin...bang top corner
Plus points were Mascherano who was full of energy in the middle...even tho he did giv the ball away a few times but he was always willing to battle for the cause and went on some long runs himself. Babel started on the right and wasnt that gud until he went over to the left and looked more dangerous. Hyypia was a rock at the back again.

i know its only a hairline frscture but another big knock could worsen it
whether he pl;ays or not...sissoko has to play for me...rafas wants to attack more this year and hes said it might make us weaker at the back..which is why we need someone like sissoko whos got big long legs and the pace to track back when the opposition break forward.

Is it just me or did Voronin's goal take a deflection of the defender that came sliding in? Replays proove kinda inconclusive.
Hopefully we can grab 3 points against Chelsea which would gives us a huge phsycological boost and with Man UTD dropping points would put us in a somewhat great position.
I dont think Rafa is stupid enough to risk Gerrard, especially this early on in the season so if Gerrard does play then its probably because he is ok. Rafa is probably just being over-cautious in the press as he doesnt want Gerrard playing for England and coming back with some stupid injury.
Dont really think we need to overload the midfield against Chelsea especially as the likes of Ballack and Essien are not going to play. Championship winning teams play to their own strengths rather than trying to counter the tactics of the opposing team because not before long we will play a team like Bolton who will then try to counter our tactics and our players wont have a clue as how to break them down, as happened so many times last season.
With the players we have now Rafa should really ditch the whole counter-attacking style of play. Apart from in Europe obviously.

LIVERPOOL FC V CHELSEA FC
.
I think the last couple of times when this fixture has been this early in the season chelsea went on to win both games 1-0 and 4-1.
This fixture last year saw us beat chelsea 2-0 when the chelsea defence had the likes of Terry and Carvalho injured and had to settle with Ferreira and Essian as centre backs. But took advantage of that and beat the team that was infront of us.
Todays fixture will be alot closer as Chelsea are full strenght with their captian John Terry making a full recovery from and injury he suffered during the summer.
All eyes will be on the new boys (if they play), the likes of Malouda and Sidwell of Chelsea and Anfield Debutants Torres, Babel, Benayoun etc
Theres been alot of talk about 'making a statement of intent' if Liverpool overcome their rivals today but im predicting a more cautious and tight affair
a tight 1-1 for me |

UK_Jatt - Were you watching the same game as I? How can you say Pennant had a good game? He was utter crap! I cannot even remember one noteworthy cross or dribble that he put in. The only thing worthy he done was some of the tracking back he done in the 10-15 mins prior to being subbed off.
What frustrates me is that Chelsea were there for the taking today but rather than trying to kill off the game we were too busy just lobbing the ball up there. Alonso also looked alot of the pace today and I would probably keep him out of the next game if todays showing is the best he is currently capable of performing.
Babel was also a bit frustrating as he did not want to eat up the space on the wing and was always cutting in.
AND wtf were we doing in the last minute of the game trying to play some 'ole' football rather than just hoofing it into the box...like we had done for most of the game prior to that??
Having said that, the ref cost us 2 points and an psychological advantage. So infuriating especially with the way todays other results have gone!

Sorry I disagree, I thought some of Pennant's crosses were superb, shame no one got on the end of it, but he wasn't playing badly.
I would go as far as to say Steve McLaren should consider him on the England squad, think that might have been mentioned to him.
Lets get over the penalty, it will put a downer on the game and i'm sure the headlines tmrw will vent our frustrations! There was a lot of positives to take away from the match, more so than in previous clashes against Chelsea. Liverpool 16 shots on target, Chelsea only had 7. A striker who looks promising and has already repaid some of those millions spend on him! Gerrard back in central midefield, where he belongs...

WHAT A GAME!
very proud of all of our players only ruined by the referee, finnan was turning and malouda jumped. cant say chelsea cheated, but can only say the ref just lost the plot. once he started booking players for their first challenges in the first half, he was always going to ruin the second half.
alonso for me was flawless and provided gerrard with freedom, but even gerrard defended very well. i disagree with manya too. pennant was damn awesome on sunday. you can see a relationship with torres forming between the two and gerrard - genius pass to put torres through after hard work from kuyt to win the ball and alonso's header.
chelsea were threatening, but always lacklustre.
very impressed with torres. his manner was legendary. he caused lots of trouble, angered terry and subsequently slapped him! haha! i loved that. his goal was something dirk kuyt could never ever ever ever (x 1,000,000) do.
dirk ended up frustrating me when in need for a goal, he cant get a shot, with his feet, on target. in the 60th minute i would have replaced dirk with babel, rather than sacrificing a tiring pennant.
but 1-1 isnt the worst result. if we can walk away from stamford bridge with the same result (or a win) beat united and arse.
the performance was good for us. we just need to be a little more clinical. hopefully that will come (esp from kuyt). |

REF ROB STYLES APOLOGISES
Referee Rob Styles will not officiate in the Premier League next weekend following his performance in the Liverpool-Chelsea game on Sunday.
Styles was criticised for awarding a controversial penalty to Chelsea.
Referees' chief Keith Hackett told BBC Radio 5live: "It is just like with players, if they miss an open goal they are likely to be dropped."
Styles also appeared to show Chelsea's Michael Essien a second yellow card but then failed to send him off.
Interview: Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez
Former referee Hackett is general manager of Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body which oversees referees.
The referees' supremo has apologised to Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez for the error.
Hackett added: "I spoke to Rob this morning and obviously he is extremely disappointed with the decision and admitted he got it wrong. I have left a message with Rafael Benitez to apologise.
"Having looked at a video and seen a better angle and a better view, clearly he (Styles) now recognises that he got it wrong and he's deeply apologetic for that. I think, in fact, he too will be making contact with Liverpool in order to offer his apologies."
Asked about the confusion when Essien appeared to be booked for a second time, Hackett said: "I'm informed by both the fourth official and Rob he retained the card shown to John Terry then held the card to indicate a direct free-kick, and failed to put the card away.
"So it was a basic, if you like, admin error as against an error in application of law.
"We'll look at the video to ensure we don't get a repeat of that."
Benitez was left incensed and skipper Steven Gerrard said Styles had "cracked" after he penalised Steve Finnan for a foul on Florent Malouda, although replays showed there was no contact.
"That decision is impossible to explain, it was the invisible penalty" said Benitez after the 1-1 draw.
Hackett also revealed assistant referee Ian Gosling will be given next weekend off, after he denied Fulham a late goal at home to Middlesbrough when David Healy clearly forced the ball over the line.
He said: "Clearly the assistant referee has made an error, so he won't be operating next week for us either."
But Hackett defended the overall standard of refereeing, describing the mistakes over the weekend as a "hiccup".
The Essien incident happened shortly after Styles had awarded Chelsea their penalty, which Frank Lampard converted to level the scores after Fernando Torres put Liverpool in front with a goal on his home debut.
Former Premier League referee Graham Poll told BBC Radio 5live that Styles did not book Essien twice but that his award of a card to Terry looked "messy".
"At the first look I definitely thought he had booked Essien a second time," said Poll.
"Having looked I can see that as Rob raises the yellow card he points over to John Terry and says that it is John he has cautioned.
"He had just given a penalty and you have a gut feeling as a referee that you might have made a mistake.
"You are under pressure then and when the stress is at its highest it is difficult to think clearly and get everything right."
Poll, who booked Croatia's Josip Simunic three times during a World Cup match in 2006, added: "It was a big mistake."
Benitez had no sympathy with Styles after the match, adding: "I want to have a lot of respect for referees, but sometimes I cannot understand why they give some decisions.
"I think he will watch the video of the match and admit that his penalty decision was a mistake."

Come across this following complaints to merseyside police after sundays game:
"Complaints made to Merseyside police yesterday, from Chelsea fans who had 2 cups of urine thrown on them from the Anfield upper yesterday. One complaint about an adult Liverpool fan who leant over the segregation mesh and spat in the face of a 7 year old boy"
No faeces thrown this time but then spitting on a 7 year old boy is a new low! |

Not a got a link for sunday's excrement chucking activities as such, just people in the know of a particular united forum have been informed of the complaints to the merseyside police. But when your own club has admitted in the past cups of shit have been thrown then it will hardly be a shock if these reports are confirmed! |

Skysports.com understand that Micah Richards is yet to sign his new contract at Manchester City.
City offered the England star fresh terms late last month, but as yet the deal remains unsigned.
Richards is arguably one of the hottest prospects in world football and City are desperate to tie him down to a new contract - even though he has two seasons left on his current deal.
The player's current contract is below the level of an England international, which has prompted City to make their move.
Interest
Most of Europe's big-guns, including England's top four - are keeping very close tabs on the situation.
The 19-year-old made his name last season at right-back - but new City boss Sven Goran Eriksson has switched him to central defence where he has only enhanced his already huge reputation with a series of excellent displays - including a Man of the Match performance in the Manchester derby win over United on Sunday.
Although Richards' deal has not been rejected, City are anxious that their current offer remains unsigned.
THIS is the 1 we should buy |

I was waiting for this response about evidence and once again you ALF fall into the trap!Fonzi, pimp and many an other idiot i suggest you take in a game. Dont even try to cross that prawn sandwich line with me because you wont have a leg to stand on. See what you may discover is that everything that happens at football isnt repeated or covered in the media, so just because it isnt on the BBC wesbite or any other shite house internet source you live off does not mean it didnt happen. Keep your delusional support to t'internet and let your real supporters get on with it. Here's a link you muppets may be interested in, it was for the game against us in the FA Cup in 2006 when Alan Smith broke his leg. Your own club admitted it happened, now in the early days after another similar event happens you lot are up in arms without a clue. It a possibility it may not be true but with a precedent set would you be surprised if it was? Sometimes i wonder why i bother but i just cant help it. I wish i was more like Joe, he knows the score but i got this side that just loves to wind up the ALF!

Gman, i'm not going. I'm risking losing loyalty for the first group game, but oh well, i'll see what happens.
I've read of a few accounts where girls as young as 12 get slapped outside OT just because they wear a liverpool scarf. Some people are just bad as each other and don't know where to draw the line.
The urine and Spitting incident is ridiculous especially if you consider that Chelsea aren't even arch rivals. I know a lot of Chelsea fans are Far Right Facists or bandwagon jumpers but some of them have been loyal to their club way before Roman came in. |

@joe - Tbh for shirters Old Trafford is one the easiest grounds for away fans to visit. If you come mob handed looking for it then certainly you'll get what you looking for but that rarely ever happens in the modern era now. No doubting joe there are idiots in every support and i have seen a few in ours. But at the end of the day what you read is accounts, no guaranteed proof. Come on though, a 12 year old girl getting slapped hardly compares to innocent shirters being knifed over several years in liverpool. And i dont like to remind you of Athens but we all know what was going on out there. If this scum amongst your support can do that to their fellow supporters what could they do to rentboys? What i posted has no definate proof at this stage either but your club admitted to it occuring in our fa cup tie in 06, the precedent being set there a probability it happened to against chelsea!I just cant get my head around what posseses someone to piss or shit in a cup and then throw it on opposing fans. Lowest of the low that is.
@UK_Jatt_1 - I know it is a wierd fascination but which person can not help but be fascinated with such wierd supporters, be they the internet ALF variety or the shit slinging match going variety. I doing my best to break away from it but i'm addicted! |

@Joe - Is your loyalty affected for group stages if you dont buy the qualifying game ticket? Arent you just better off getting it and selling it on rather than risk it? Moscow is unlikely for you lot as you know but then you wouldnt want to regret it next May if you did fluke it there? Also what's the score with you lot having to apply for tickets with an operator at your ticket office due to not having an automated line or e-mail application procedure? A scally was telling me that, i surprised cause as bad as our ticket office is we dont have to stay on hold to speak to any one for applications. That happens when the cock the tickets up in some form or another! The process of ordering tickets is just another money making scam! |

no one gives a shit about your opinion, and your not even winding anyone up but yourself, as for some kid being beaten there are countless examples of this in all football grounds not only now but in the 90's and 80's, there are idiots at every club, it just so happens that i can admit they exist at liverpool and can accept its not the norm, where as you cant even accept its a part of uniteds predigree.
as for the prawn sandwich comment, it wasnt me that said it, it was your old captain.
and im sorry this post is a little longer than usual, it wasnt intended to be, but since your going to reply with a dissertation can you put it into the following format so we can look at it and still ignore the bullshit you write.
here ill help you..
a comment to note:
Avoid one sentence paragraphs. Too many and a page will be filled with numerous gaps, imparting a feeling of discontinuity with the content. Similarly, avoid long sentences. Long sentences are difficult to read, and can obscure an otherwise simple explanation. Try to keep sentence length to less than two lines, and at the same time, make appropriate use of punctuation. Punctuation break a sentence into readable chunks, reduce ambiguity and, if used wisely, can for increase effect and emphasis. A word of warning though - do not apply punctuation at random as they can change the meaning of a sentence.

I don't think loyalty is affected, very rarely do qualifiers count.

We all know the Red Army repuation but using tools certainly isnt their trademark.
How many of thos 5 cups you lot always bang on about have been won in open play? Honestly dontthe answer but i would hazzard a guess very few!
Yeh my brother told me about T having the same hassle trying to get the rentboys, basically was no chance. Have the yanks expanded the hospitality packages? It was one of the first things the glazers hit on, the basic packages for the lowest ranked teams starts from around £125 for a meal and match ticket!!!absolute joke.
Haha heard that 'Greatest Midfield' song of yours, catchy number but you need to change it to he greatest central midfield and you may have a case but overall midfield? No chance, we woud be he ones singing that if anyone from these shores was too! |

But the idiots like yourself fonzi serve to support my argument, there are idiots in every support but the truth is liverpool have by far the biggest number of such idiots. So much so the hypcoricy and stupidity extends to the ALF!Moving from banter about the european cups to the munich tragedy in one fell swoop, you look like a real comedian dont ya?

Typical scouse response, mock Munich but your support rather than pull your man up on it, sweep it under the carpet and focus on something else. And it's not playing the victim at all, just highlighting the hypocricy of the ALF.
As far as the 'I am the Best fan in world', couldnt be further from the truth and show me i actually state that. If that how it comes off that your issue not mine. Whether it's tiresome for you or not it isnt for me, it's a time pass on a public forum where everyone can share their opinion. It's ok to sing Munich here then it's ok for me to scouse bash all day long!If it hurts or is tiresome i suggest RAWK or other such scouse forums where you can have an all day scouse love in! |

CHELSEA SIGN BELLETTI
thats wicked news coz they were quite close gettin Alves whos now favourite to join Real
It goes to show that its down to Seville and how they over inflated Daniel Alves' price tag....just like theyv done the previous 2 seasons when we tried to sign him.
As for us...cicinho wants to join Roma but Real havnt as of yet accepted their offer as we'v offered them more
and Heinze is definately off the list now....so will rafa bother with other 'possibilities' or will he stick it out until jan when most of the top talent has already gone or cuptied?

I haven't watched any of the other finals apart from Istanbul, but as far as I know our first European Cup win Keegan gave Berti Vogts a terrible time. So i'm assuming we had most of the attacking play. I think it finished 3-1 in the end.
Its a shame that the likes of Barnes, Aldridge, Rush and Beardsley didn't get to showcase their qualities in Europe. I'm sure it would be 6 or 7 if they had....and in style as well |

Watch our 68' final if you ever get bored, turned Benfica over a treat or our 5-1 demolition job our 66' game away at the Stadium of Light against them, probably the most feared team at the time above even Real.
