Potentially, yes, but not just yet.
What I'm talking about is how Asians appear to fawn after traits attributed to the Arabs: fair skin; adoption of Arab culture in even the smallest of ways like the smoking of sheesha pipes by Asian youths; the popularity of Arab countries as holiday destinations etc. |

Fojee is a breeze of fresh air around here. All he says is true, but even more so, the muslim has another unique pathology. He feels that hes under attack and suffering when another Muslim suffers some thousand miles away. It is a curious thing. Yes, all kinds of men feel sympathy for the unfortunate Iraqi or Lebanese, but this is different. True enough: one feels pain when his own people suffer. His own being the direct cultural kind, and not just having the same religion as you( though in some cases there is an equivalence).
Imagine the trouble and problems that could be solved, that become non-problems, if only the Muslim would not take the pain personally, of some stranger seperated by culture and space.
And yet it is this curious anomaly which leads to, for example, the events of 7/7, and even more recent ones. Tis a very curious thing indeed.

South Asian muslims more so than south asians in general do kind of look upto the Arab world.
Not all do, and it depends how much they do but the religion they follow did originate in Saudi Arabia; so you can't really blame em.
But as Basic said, influences are all over the joint these days.

Folks the discussion's gone off on somewhat of a tangent.
But with regards to the above I live amongst Arabs and have been to school with and am friends with them and the ideals of Ummah as espoused by South Asian Muslims doesn't seem to ring true of their Arab brethren.
On Barfi we've debated at length the Arab-Israeli conflict but in my 18 years I've heard only once any of my Arab friends or neighbours display an interest in the cause of Kashmiris, for example. It appears a one way street.
Going their way.
But that's not what I'm talking about.
What I was talking about is something I've noticed from South Asian Muslims; Hindus; Sikhs and Christians, be they Pakistanis; Indians; Sri Lankans and whatever else you can think of under the Sun.
I know what you mean, Basic, about the Arab infatuation with Bollywood- but that doesn't equate to the "admiration" given back to them.
I've been to subcontinent and the Middle East many a time and though they may speak broken Hindi that they pick up from Amitabh Sabh they don't view us South Asians in the highest esteem.
But I get a sense of people trying to justify or aspire to be of "Arab" stock.
I was told I looked "Arabic" by a girl and when I appeared offended she said "But that's a good thing" :|
Not that I have a dim view of them but I am not of Arab lineage and find it a bit annoying to be classed as something I am not.
The thing that struck me most was how appearing Arab to her, as a Pakistani girl, was somehow a 'better ideal' than me and her being South Asians.
That case in point doesn't appear to be an anomoly either.
Question is; why? |

We have family in Oman and Dubai and I'm pretty sure my cousins my age can speak fluent Arabic and not a lick of Punjabi (I wouldn't know since I can't talk to them because of their dumbass ways)
They always seem to have this inferiority complex being South Asians living in the Arab world.
When in Rome do as the Romans do etc.: fair play.
But shouldn't we be proud of ourselves, who we are and where we come from first and foremost? |

I know what your saying fojee, and it can be very annoying and also give out the wrong impression as it did to me when i was much younger.
When your hearing that the Arab world is the best and what not at everything; but you live in the UK, it can kinda confuse you.
But the underlying problem to this is that most of the time its Islam being praised or boasted about.
Thats where the talk of the middle east comes from and starts from, the religion.
Its not wrong to talk about your own religion but you should try and talk about all religions and not make it a one sided issue.
After all youngs minds are very impressionable and its hard for many to think outside the box after a certain age.

I see what you're saying, but to put all Arabs in the same category isn't right either. Some Arabs may frown at Asians as inferior but Arabs frown at other Arabs for being inferior. Depending on what part of the Middle East you come from, you are stereotyped accordingly. Some of the stereotypes i've heard are:
Yemenis are thick (viewed similar to the Irish)
Kuwaitis are gay
Saudis are up there own arses
I'm sure there are plenty of stereotypes and these stereotypes remain between narrow minded Arabs, just like we have divisions between South Asian countries.
The racism may come from Arabs to Asians but i've seen plenty of shitty views by South Asians against Arabs.
It works two ways really, it's just that we see one side of it mostly. |

I get that they have their own hierarchy of sorts and that Arabs are a heterogenous lot but what I'm getting at mostly is why lokh aspire to them and not how they look down on "Hindustani looking folks".
Even talking to my 'Southall' mate Rav, he tried explaining the concept of castes amongst Punjabis to me and justified their existance because Jatts apparently look "more Arab" than lower castes, who, I inferred were more akin to Dravidian peoples so making them in some way superior! :|
So this "envy" crosses religious lines and becomes one that concerns alot of South Asians. |

I actually think there bit of social class involved in this whole thing.
At university, I noticed that the rich Pakistani foreign students tended to follow the arab kids' sense of style. For example, like all of them knew about persian and arab music but wouldn't be caught dead listening to qawwali or something like that. One FOB kept trying to make fun of me cause that day I was listening to Abida Parween, who is an incredible singer btw, and I was like, she's only one of your country's best singers!
In South Asian history class, there was definitely a big deal made about claiming persian or turkish blood (oddly enough, not so much arab).
But on the flip side, the rich indian kids from India weren't much better than that at all. It was more of a let's all be euro-trash. Plus, its all about how well you speak english and how un-Indian you really were (the exception for both though was when it came to cricket). It was very cool to listen to bob dylan and play the guitar, or techno and some other euro-trashy music.
When you look at who really actively participated in the cultural shows and activities, the religious societies etc, it was the South Asian American kids.

Fojee, what you talk about with regards envy towards the Arab World is completely off the board from how I see it amongst Indians. Indians, be they Gujarati or Punjabi (the bulk of hindus in uk are these two language groups) will see themselves as wholly and fully Indian and not want to be associated with anything Arabic apart from the longing to go and chill in Dubai for a few days. I am sure this is the same for Sikhs also, an attraction or longing towards Arabia aint really there mate.
We also have shades of outright fair skin to medium to dark (dumb suject matter it is but however as somebody pointed out above as a reason) amongst our own peoples so why do u need to look towards Arabia for that. Bollywood culture is magnetic for Arabs and I am sure they dont see Indians as what the BBC and other news channels show and depict all the time about India - slums and poverty. |

I would agree with your there, Asian lads are a phenomena upon themselves. The asian girls seem to be out doing them in every aspect now.
But i would say asian parents, the first generation here, did indeed create wealth from scratch. Vast majority came here with little else more than their plane ticket and their suit cases.
I havent seen many with asian women. They tend to date their own as far as ive seen out and about. And who could blame them ...their women a very dishy ;-D |

Pakistani people have a fixation of all things Arabic is because SOME of us have Arab heritage and because we are Muslims. Naturally we will then follow their customs. This is not just particular to Pakistani people. Any non Arab Muslim usually has affiliation towards Arabia. This can be seen in Whites and Blacks who convert to Islam. They usually learn Arabic and become very Middle Eastern orientated.
This is however changing as Islamic power shifts from the Arabic countries to countries such as Iran, Pakistan, Indonesia, the Central Asian Islamic republics and a growing trend in Turkey (where the Islamic parties won an election recently but were denied by the Turkish generals, for now). As Isreal gets stronger and their domination is consolidated from Lebanon to Iran's borders, Arabic culture will weaken until they can form a credible defence towards them. This can only be achieved by self suffiency.
Thats a first, Hindus and Sikhs being interested in Arabic culture? Never heard of that one before. Hindus and Sikhs are very Westernised and follow European culture other than their own.

I admire Arab women's beauty though..
