Quedos to Mr Burney!!!! More men like him are needed on both sides of the border.

No doubt there are still hundreds, if not thousands more men lying in prisons in both india and pakistan under similar circumstances.

An Indian man released from a Pakistani prison after spending 35 years on death row has been reunited with his family in India.

Kashmir Singh, sentenced to death for spying in 1973, was released on Monday.

He was discovered by Ansar Burney, a social worker who tracks people lost in Pakistan's jail system.

Hundreds of servicemen and civilians were imprisoned by India and Pakistan during hostilities between the two sides in 1965 and 1971.

Hundreds of people, including Mr Singh's wife and son, gathered at the Wagah border in the northern Indian state of Punjab to greet him.

He was re-united with his family after basic medical tests and checks at the border.

"I am very, very happy and will escort him back to gurdwara [Sikh temple] to pray," his wife, Paramjeet Singh said.

Spies

The garlanded Mr Singh left for his village without speaking to the waiting media at the border before leaving for his village.

Mr Burney discovered Mr Singh on a recent trip to a jail in Lahore and persuaded Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to revoke his death sentence and order his release.

Mr Singh was a former policeman who had become a trader in electronic goods.

Speaking on Monday after his release from jail, he said: "I feel better. I am happy."

Mr Singh was arrested in the city of Rawalpindi in 1973 and convicted of spying.

Pakistan and India frequently arrest each other's citizens, often accusing them of straying across the border - some are treated as spies.

Mr Burney is currently the government's caretaker minister for human rights.

'Hell on Earth'

Mr Burney said last week that Mr Singh had been held in a condemned prisoner's cell for most of the time since his conviction, and had become mentally ill.

He said that he was first informed about the case several years ago by members of the Indian community in London.

But he was unable to locate Mr Singh, despite visiting more than 20 jails across the country in connection with his campaign for prison reforms and prisoners' rights.

The minister said Mr Singh had not received a single visitor or seen the open sky and, like other condemned prisoners, was locked in an overcrowded cell for more than 23 hours a day, in conditions which the minister described as "hell on Earth".

Im surprised no one has mentioned this, but according to GEO, Kashmir Singh converted to Islam whilst in prison and changed his name to Ibrahim.

Would be interesting to see the reaction of his family.

Even when they showed imaged of him on the BBC website, I got the impression, from the shape of his beard, he looked more Muslim than Sikh.

LAHORE: Indian national Kashmir Singh has been set free after 35 years from the Koth Lakhpat jail here on Monday after President Pervez Musharraf pardoned him.

Kashmir Singh seemed happy when he came out of Koth Lakhpat jail. He has embraced Islam and named Ibrahim during his long detention behind bars.

Kashmir Singh was garlanded when he emerged out of the jail with Caretaker Human Rights Minister Ansar Burney. He will stay in a five star hotel tonight and Ansar Burney will take Kashmir Singh to the Wagah border tomorrow.

Paramjit Kaur, wife of Kashmir Singh along with others family members will receive her husband whom he married at the age of 16 and who has been waiting for Kashmir Singh for the last 35 years. She said people told her that Kashmir was dead but she did not lose hope.

Funny how some people think that during the 35 years in a pakistani prison this guy would have the freedom to practice his faith. Especially considering the following from the article:-

"'Hell on Earth'

Mr Burney said last week that Mr Singh had been held in a condemned prisoner's cell for most of the time since his conviction, and had become mentally ill"

Well he might still have vital information...

.. I don't want to sound like a cunt, and i know when it comes to India-Pakistan matters to the neutral eye i often do...

... but spies are there to cause harm, i don't see why release a person or even imprison them. If a person is there and is a national security risk, take them out.

It's like failed scuicide bombers, I'd have them shot.

dude he was convicted as a spy, and pardoned as a spy so there was never any doubt (from the Pakistani side anyway) that he was actually a spy so i dont know why your surprised.

And anyway going by his waist size, it doesnt look like he was mistreated to the levels some are claiming.
