What is barfiCulture about?
barfi Culture is online magazine and community website primarily populated by the British Asian community. By Asian we mean those who originate from the Indian sub-continent: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. It's a loose term, and our aim is not to exclude any race, religion or community. A small but significant percent of visitors are also from mainland Europe, USA and Canada.
The website was created with 3 main aims in mind. Firstly to be a place where people could come to and discuss intellectual issues, and be able to explore their own creativity as well as get inspiration from others. Secondly to facilitate understanding between the different and diverse communities that are called "Asian". It aims to build bridges in a community frequently fragmented by religion, caste, sex and race etc. Here everyone is on an equal standing, and people who try to start trouble by abusing those from another religion or caste etc are banned. The aim is to create understanding, not let a few haters create trouble. Thirdly to let the users create their own content. This makes sure not only that the content here is fresh and diverse, but also means that everyone can get involved and have an outlet for what they want to share. Who runs this website? This website has been created almost entirely by sunny, writer, thinker, media commentator and web designer extraordinairre. It's not owned by any company and doesn't have any affiliations with any companies. This is a hobby website which is run on the side when he's working full time. It's his aim, through some miracle, to find a way of working on barfiCulture full time and not have to worry about money, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon. In addition to Sunny running everything on barfiCulture, he is also helped out by many people who are regulars. There are a whole bunch of admins who have the power to delete messages and ban trouble makers. Then there are also a group of columnists who irregularly write articles for the Magazine, and various enthusiasts who review music, movies, games and books on a regular basis. How do I get started? You can become part of the barfiCulture community when you start posting messages anywhere on the site. To do that, all you have to do is get registered from the Profiles section. Registration is quick and of course free. After that, you can start responding to messages in the community section, or discuss articles posted on Reality magazine, or express your own thoughts in the Entertainment section - it's up to you. No one can get information about you that you don't want to reveal. barfiCulture: a quick history Sunny has been designing websites as a hobby since 1995. In 1999 he got involved in doing a Asian magazine's website and made that (by his own estimates) one of the most visited asian site in the UK due to the popularity of the message-boards. He left that site in August 2001, and started his own online magazine (barfiCulture), and started spreading the word from the 9th of August 2001. He was fortunate to have made loads of excellent friends at the previous site who made barfiCulture their new online home. Why the name? The first idea was to call the website: sweet like curry. That was thought to be too tacky, so it was changed it to sweet like barfi. The website was nearly finished with that name but then Sunny found out it was the name of an Asian gay and lesbian event in London. So the name was changed to barfi Culture and painfully re-designed |
